The Last Letter

He fell into a strange pond, he was striding. Nothing could’ve changed the way people are when they are with other people. Or so he believed. It felt more surreal as she kept on conversing with him naturally. It was almost torture. This was never in his plan as he never expected this to happen. He had been trying to tell his only friend, he was afraid.

She exuded sweet calmness and reminded him of early spring. She would tell him stories from her childhood, her grandmother and her school days. Sometimes she felt she was being childish for missing those moments and too naïve for having simple needs in life. She said she wanted a family one day, looking both blissful and faraway. He started to rethink about his plan.

The friend listened to all of his problems but paid little attention to what wasn’t said. He considered the pressures and shackles from his family could be straining his friend so he kept quiet. He didn’t want to lose the most important person to him. When his friend proposed to the innkeeper’s daughter, he was alarmed. When the daughter accepted it gleefully, he didn’t know what to do. He couldn’t remember what to do.

He left without a note. His old journals and letters were all that his friend could find. He was a pessimist yet his written words were hopeful and sonorous. Like someone who wanted to explore more, feel more and be understood. His friend wondered why he didn’t see it before and wept every night in his dreams as he confessed his sins.
