Making friends in a foreign city is easier than you think.
My parents were terrified of me leaving the United Kingdom to travel around the world. I remember what my mom said as if it were yesterday: “You’re going to get robbed, lost, and stuck in the middle of a foreign country.”
She was right. While living in Melbourne, I had several hundred dollars stolen from my wallet. That taught me not to carry more cash than I need. And during a trip to Malaysia, my suitcase was accidentally taken from the train, because it looked strikingly similar to someone else’s luggage.
A lot of people seem to think that travel is drinking cocktails on the beach, exploring the rainforest, and tasting local cuisine. But the truth is that things do, and will, go wrong while traveling. But you see, that’s the beauty of it.
You can learn from each experience and use it to become the type of person you want to be.
So below are several things I wish I knew before I started traveling the world. Each of these insights changed my life for the better, and I’m sure they will do the same for you, too.
