Dealing with Rejection

It’s not the end of your writing career

Source: Upslash.com

No writer goes through their career without their works being rejected. Rejection is a fact of writing life, but it doesn’t have to be the end of the world. There are plenty of options still left to you even if your work is rejected.

First take a deep breath. Let those emotions, whatever they are, flow through you. Being defensive, angry, or sad are all common emotions. There’s nothing wrong with feeling these emotions except the way you act on them or if you let them keep hold of you. Take some time to process if you need to so that you can move on to the next step.

There are many different options you can do following a rejection. The first one you should do no matter your next moves is to take another look at your work. Double check for errors and weak areas. If you’re lucky enough to have been told why you were rejected, focus on those areas. Ultimately it’s up to you to decide how much change is needed to move forward, but an extra look will never hurt.

One option is to make changes and to resubmit. If you were given reasons why you were rejected and fixed those areas, you might want to go this route. Otherwise resubmitting to the same publication is probably not the best avenue.

Luckily there are plenty of publications out there. Just because one publication isn’t happy with your work, doesn’t mean another might not see your work as a perfect fit. A lot of authors go through many different rejections before they find someone willing to publish their works.
