Importance of Mobile Accessibility in the Digital World

Hello Everyone! In this blog post, I would like to talk about the importance and need of considering Mobile Accessibility for our websites and applications.

Mobile Accessibility(a11y) refers to making websites and Native apps accessible to everyone, regardless of ability or disability when users interact with the internet using Mobile phones, tablets, and other devices.

Did you know? The statistics say, around 70% of visually impaired people who use a screen reader use it on mobile devices and not on desktops.

Accessible websites and applications have become the standard now, so it stands to reason that mobile devices are the logical next frontier in the pursuit of a more inclusive digital world. So, those who seek to preserve fairness and inclusion on the web must prioritize mobile accessibility!

First steps first! Let’s start with these very basic steps.

1. Understanding mobile features
Understanding the common mobile features used and checking how accessible they are in different devices/browsers (Examples: Use of screen readers (Voiceover/Talkback), zoom, color contrast, display size, scroll/swipe traps, etc.)

2. Create awareness of the Importance of Mobile a11y:´´
Bring this awareness to everyone, from stakeholders to every participant in the project, so that the mobile a11y specific features are taken care of along with the web a11y topic. This helps in the reduction of cost to design and implement a11y features across devices, not only on desktop.

I find that discovering new issues while you learn more about mobile accessibility is an important step to improving mobile accessibility for users.

4. Mobile accessibility testing:
Plan accessibility testing with different devices (iOS and Android) & browser combinations and with possible assistive technology/screen readers.
Recommended combinations:
1. iPhone / Safari / VoiceOver
2. iPad / Safari / VoiceOver
3. Galaxy S10 / Chrome / TalkBack
4. Galaxy Tab S3 / Chrome / TalkBack

All these simple steps help to improve the lives of our digital users and shoppers with more accessibility ever than before!

In summary, it’s clear that Mobile accessibility is part of Web accessibility, and considering this improves your business with more users and increases your brand value!!
