When Drugs Coupled With Mental Health Problems Turned Into a Mother Beheading Her Toddler

She later killed herself too

Smoking PCP ended tragically for a mother who ended up beheading her two-year-old child in August 2012 in Camden, New Jersey.

The thirty-three-year-old woman later committed suicide after realizing what she had done. This is a story that highlights the importance of taking care of those with mental health issues.

Before the tragic incident happened, there were many incidents where the mother, Chevonne Thomas, was caught high on drugs.

In November 2010, Thomas left her son, Zahree, unattended in a vehicle. Thomas was later found high on drugs, which led to an induced blackout. When the police questioned her, Thomas reported that she had taken marijuana laced with PCP. After the incident, Thomas’s son was taken from her and placed in the care of a relative.

But, after nine months, Thomas got her son back after she managed to go through substance abuse, mental health, and counseling services. State workers with the Department of Children and Families deemed Thomas fit to get her child back.

Only a month after retaining custody of her son, Thomas tested positive for PCP in a urine test. Again, Zahree was removed from Thomas’s care and placed back with the relative. And, again, Zahree stayed with the relative for nine months before being returned to Thomas’s care.

Four months after Zahree was returned to his mother, the worst happened. The authorities received a disturbing 911 call from a very troubled mother.

Dispatcher: 911, what’s your emergency?

Thomas: Yes. Somebody just stabbed my baby. Please get here.

Dispatcher: They just did what?

Thomas: Stabbed my baby.

Dispatcher: Do you know who it was ma’am?

Thomas: Yes. It’s my ex… it’s my boyfriend. My current boyfriend.
