An engineering graduate or An Engineer.

Couple of years back approximately 4–5 years back, there were students who were compelled to appear in JEE since Gujarat Government has made it mandatory by eliminating GUJCET at the end of academic year, and hence some of them didn’t get good marks due to abrupt decision of government. As they were desired to do engineering they ended up taking admission in tier 2 or tier 3 colleges of engineering with the hope of becoming an engineer and with fire in their stomach to learn something new there. They were full of enthusiasm & excitement in initial semesters, but as the time has started flying away their enthusiasm & excitement were suppressed by either immature faculties or college management and eventually its fade away. They were repenting their decisions of choosing their respective colleges.

Let’s dive little bit deep into it, who are the faculties of this tier 2 -3 colleges? Majority of them are the bunch of people who didn’t work hard enough to get into core industries after their B.Tech or B.E (of course there are faculties who loves teaching and that’s why they have joined college but such faculties are very few) so what they have done after B.Tech or B.E was, by influence of their acquaintances they will take admission in some private college for M.Tech or M.E. Now these private colleges are greedy, there sole deliberation of opening up college is to earn money. Such stupid fellows even fulfil their intentions by taking admission in M.Tech. They won’t even know curriculum of M.Tech and still at the end of 2 years they will get degree of M.Tech. Now they have MTech Degree which ironically qualifies them to be recruited as faculty, so most of the tier2 -3 colleges will recruit such people because they will demand less salary since they have zero knowledge of their respective field.

From next day on wards they will be standing in front of class, who is quite inquisitive to learn something new regarding engineering, and what this insane fellow will do in class, he will start reading PPT which he has got from internet. If someone will ask question they will either dodge from it or say will tell you tomorrow which has not happened yet. If students complain to management about faculty then faculty will harass students in internals & in submission. Sometimes management also does the drama of reprimanding a faculty. In addition to this most of faculties of such colleges don’t have any internship or industry experience, teaching is not something that they have chosen it’s the only option that they are left out with. In such scenario college administration will demand 75% attendance, for what purpose they want 75% attendance?? Only to ensure that whether faculties that they have recruited are capable enough to read English sentences from PPT or not.

(Just to help you to understand this context, I am from Mechanical Engineering background, we had subject called OHP (Oil hydraulic & pneumatic) for which one new faculty was appointed. He has done his M.Tech from one of the reputed private college in Gujarat. So we all were quite excited for his 1st lecture but unfortunately he turned out even worst than other faculty. In his 1st lecture he didn’t even know the full form & spelling of subject. Here we got one more lesson of engineering that don’t judge book by it’s cover.)

College administration also claims that they have well equipped labs. I have been on quest to find out those so called well equipped labs but unfortunately yet to find even one. Even if some colleges have 1 or 2 good labs which they will treat as their GOLD biscuits. Students are only allowed to have look of machine from distance. Is there anything exist like conducting an experiment? I doubt. When students live under such type of ambient, over period of time students may lose their determination and hope of becoming “an Engineer”. You will agree with me that its really challenging to isolate yourself and remain dedicated and convicted to your desire and dream under such environment which focuses only to clear the exam.

Ironically when this kind of batch will graduate, society will expect them to be able to be good engineer and solve their problems. How they could solve…!!! Because in their journey of 4 years, they have never been nurtured to be an Engineer.

As every coin has two sides this is the only one side that I have showed you, let’s look at another side as well. There are some students who have chosen engineering because their parents have said to do so or their friends have taken or some relatives have told them to take engineering. Since I am emphasising on impediments that the students who are willing to be an engineer in real manner faces so, let’s not discuss this in much details.

Somehow they will complete 4 years in college. Some of them will even get job off-campus. As there is no such thing as placement exists in these colleges. Some students will opt for higher studies to get better exposure. But the problem remains same how to get core technical knowledge so that’s why some will join GATE coaching or some private training. They graduated at the age of 21 or 22 years so there is a family pressure as well to start earning as early as possible. So they will start preparing for any exam irrespective of their qualification which is obviously justifiable in this situation.

Then society will complain that today’s engineers are worth less, I agree on this but first of all they are not engineers, they are just engineering graduates like any other graduates. A person is said to be an engineer when he develops creative thought process, possess the ability to solve problems and so on.

Here the process of making students into engineer itself is worth less hence the product coming out of that process is worth less. However there are some exceptional students who remain focused in such adverse ambient and do the persistent hard work throughout the 4 years and get into desired core field.

My question is only that who has created such situation of inflation of engineers, I believe there is combined effort of our entire education system and college.
