Giving a telling off

From 0 to 60 with no steps in-between ..

Over the past 6 months a number of people have shared their challenges in ‘giving a telling off’ – my words not theirs. Whether its the time of year or a coincidence it seems to have happened enough time for me to now consider this challenge.

With further exploration with these people it seems we may be heading from 0 to 60 with no steps in between… how do I explain this better?

When listening to their stories and listening for the deeper narrative what I hear is..

Then there is a BOOM – an explosion of frustration/anger and emotion pours out in a rant or in a more formal nature of ‘consequence’ (verbal warnings).

Now no one wants to get to this point so I ask myself why is this happening… what is going on?

Below is a crude illustration of something that may help managers of people and people being managed.

We need to look at this from both the ‘manager’ and the ‘people being managed’ perspective…

Just some early thoughts on managing standards when they seem to be dropping…
