Aphasia Basics

Have you had a stroke or any type of injury to your brain? Are you having a hard time talking?

You might have aphasia. Aphasia is a problem with language, with speaking or understanding language or both. It makes communicating difficult. It might be mild or it could be severe.

You can think when you have aphasia. The problem is with communicating, not with thinking.

The language skills are in the left side of the brain in most people. Damage to the left side of your brain, especially in the temporal or frontal lobes, can cause aphasia.

What are the Types of aphasia?

Aphasia often also leads to difficulty reading and writing.

Treatments for Aphasia

There are many ways to work on your language if you have aphasia. Speech therapists help people with aphasia.

Treatment can be restorative, which means language skills get better or recover. Treatment can help compensate or make up for having difficulty talking and understanding.

There are a several different techniques to improve language including computer based, therapy based, working with the family, or using music or melodic techniques.

The American Speech and Hearing Association (ASHA) discusses these treatments on their Aphasia page.

The type of treatment you get depends on what you want and need. You may work with a speech and language pathologist on your own or in a small group. You may want your family to be a part of your treatment. They can help you use the skills you learn with the speech pathologist at home.
