More specifically, panic attacks are a type of anxiety disorder and knowing what causes panic attacks is often the key to relieving them.

A panic attack happens when your brain starts producing lots of excess adrenaline, just like it would in a situation of real danger. First and foremost, you need to convince your brain that there is no reason to start this chemical reaction.

(It is also highly improbable that you will black out and lose consciousness that very second, as the attack happens gradually and in phases. You’ll have enough time to react and place yourself into a position where you can faint without falling.)

That said, the following DIY hacks will surely help you alleviate panic attacks the next time they kick in.

Most people recognize the moment when they are about to have a panic attack. The peak of the attack doesn’t happen that very instant, so you have time to react in those first moments.

Distract your thoughts by solving a logical problem, a riddle or a rebus. When you have a panic attack, the emotional part of the brain turns off the logical part of the brain (prefrontal cortex). This happens for the benefit of your struggle for survival, and it’s rather similar to ‘fight or flight’ response.
