Greywater is the New Water

Onsite nonpotable reuse systems can help communities reuse water for non-drinking water purposes. Read how Tucson Water is encouraging customers to install greywater systems for irrigation.

Onsite nonpotable water systems capture and treat water sources generated from within or surrounding a building, such as:

The treated water is then reused onsite or locally for non-drinking purposes. The most common indoor use is toilet and urinal flushing. Other potential uses of the water are irrigation, cooling/heating applications, process water, and clothes washers.

The utilisation of nonpotable reuse systems generates a range of benefits, including:

Tucson Water provides a rebate for customers installing greywater irrigation systems. Customers can be reimbursed 50% of qualifying costs, up to $1,000, when permanent greywater irrigation systems are installed at homes. The rebate is available for retrofitting existing homes and for connecting new homes to greywater irrigation systems, with the rebate covering design costs, materials, storage tanks, filters, pumps, backflow prevention assembly and installation. Tucson Water customers must attend a free, two-hour greywater rebate workshop that covers methods to design, operate, and maintain a greywater system.

Onsite nonpotable water reduces demand for potable water while protecting the environment.
