Hazbin Hotel is Sinfully Good

A short review of the Hazbin Hotel pilot.

Hazbin Hotel is an adult musical dramedy by Vivienne “Viziepop” Medrano, featuring the voices of Jill Harris, Monica Franco, Michael Kovach and presented by Spindle Horse Toons. The pilot for Hazbin Hotel was released on the 28th, and I finally had a chance to take a look. While the pilot was short, it had a lot of really great elements.

Not surprisingly, hell is having an over-population issue. The solution? Genocide, of course. Now, where souls go when they die, or if they’re just destroyed, is anyone’s guess, but Charlie, the princess of hell, has had enough. And so she decides to open a hotel with the goal of rehabilitating souls and sending them to heaven. How does the rest of the citizens of hell respond to the idea? About as well as can be expected.

Hazbin Hotel has a very quirky style. It’s vibrant and bizarre. It’s definitely an adult animation and has plenty of content that isn’t appropriate for younger audiences. And the adult humor works exceptionally well, considering the setting. I admittedly don’t know my visual styles as well as I would like to, but the general attire and visual style are in many ways reminiscent of the Gatsby era, with pinstripe suits, and the occasional black and white animation.

The character designs are great, both in terms of physical appearance and in dimension. There’s a lot going on with these characters, and it makes you want to learn more about them.

Charlie is the princess of hell and daughter to Lucifer and Lilith. While a natural born resident of hell, Charlie seems to be a very compassionate person. She’s also a dreamer, and very prone to breaking out into song.

Vaggie is Charlie’s best, and probably only friend. Being down to Earth — or is it hell — she’s also Charlie’s foil, being the voice of reason in the friendship.
