Solo travel? Way no!

The idea of travelling alone both frightened and excited me at the same time, but I said that at least once I have to do it in this life. The only things that I did in advance was booking the flight and the hostel because I thought that not having a plan is the best plan to be honest.

And what other time not to plan anything than when you are alone and you can do WHATEVER YOU WANT?

Maspalomas de Gran Canaria

You go without any expectations because you are thrilled by the idea of going with the flow at least once in a while. No routine, no schedule. I guess people travel alone to find themselves a little bit more, to know what it feels like to leave aside all your friends, beloved ones, and to see how it is to interact with total strangers.

I have to be Captain Obvious now, but being a social person makes it’s easier (and being a girl, as others said), to find out so many interesting stories and connect with others. But I guess this is what hostel life brings out of us, the normal social interactions that we used to have before the internet era.

Nothing more wrong than this. Especially girls who go alone on their trips to find that true, big romantic love along the way. However, we are not in Eat Pray Love here and reality sucks most of the times.

When I travelled to Bali, half of the plane was filled with single ladies, probably waiting to find what Elizabeth Gilbert found 12 years ago. Even though you find the perfect guy on a small island and you fall in love unexpectedly, the chances are that once you are back home, everything will start to fade away and you will become total strangers again.

Having this in mind, I decided to focus my energy on something else and to experience this journey at a different level. I wanted to write, to read, to eat a lot, to travel with whomever from the hostel wanted to have a small trip around the island. And that, my friends, was the key to a PERFECT holiday.

I’ve planned on reading a lot on this holiday but only after two hours arriving at the hostel, I was invited to take part in the final night of the carnival in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. The whole city was dressed in fiesta mood and I have never seen so many happy people in one place. What can I say, my whole plan of being alone was ruined.

(tip: the carnival takes place in February and it’s said to be the next big one after Rio de Janeiro)

Jack the Captain and Emily the true reader of the hostel

You get to know a lot of people, so many that at some point you don’t bother anymore to introduce yourself. The thrill of getting to know the hostel people starts to fade away after a few days when you see that the ones that you first interacted and started to become friends with are leaving and you end up being alone again. Luckily, I managed to have a good connection with the hostel staff and didn’t bother about the others.

Cactus Room in Big Fish Hostel — I have stayed with around 12 people during my trip in this room

of a solo travel is bitter-sweet. I enjoyed it so much to be on my own and to see that I can manage to adapt myself to any situation encountered, as well as waiting to go back home and be with my friends and share all my adventures.

During my journey I said so many times: “This is by far the best day of my life” and laughed so much every day with my short term friends who made me realise how unpredictable life can be when you stop arranging every detail and you start enjoy the unknown.

As I wanted it to be a long term memory and to share everything that I experienced, I’ve also made my first travel video.

Enjoy life now and stop worrying about the future for a moment.
