Top contenders for PFA player of the year

With the English Premier League drawing to a close, it would be interesting to see which player bags the PFA Player of the Year award. The award is widely regarded as the top individual recognition in English football. According to the odds, Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson and Manchester City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne are the front-runners to lift the trophy.

Henderson led Liverpool to their first-ever Premier League triumph. Further, he helped them regain the status of the “Champions of England” after 30 years. Liverpool won their first title since EPL started. The Merseyside captain ha 4 goals and 5 assists to his name in the competition. Henderson’s impact on and off the pitch has been immense. It is evident from the fact that Liverpool won the League with seven matches to go — a Premier League record. Earlier, He won the FWA Player of the Season award after receiving more than a quarter of the votes.

On the other hand, City’s De Bruyne has the highest assists in the league with 19. Liverpool’s trio Trent Alexander-Arnold (13), Andy Robertson (11), and Salah (10) are in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place. The midfielder also has 11 goals to his name. Barely any player has impressed as much as the Belgian this season. Pundits such as Jamie Carragher have already claimed that it will be de Bruyne who gets his hands on the trophy this time.
Virgil Van Dijk won last year’s award for being the backbone of Liverpool’s defense. He became the first defender to win the trophy since 2005 when John Terry won it. Liverpool winger Mohamed Salah won the award before that. Van Dijk is in contention for the award this year as well. Although, it seems unlikely that the Dutch Centre Back can win it consecutively.

Recently, Pep Guardiola pointed out that no matter how well other players play in the league, eventually Liverpool players win the awards. He is somewhat right, to the say the least. In spite of winning the league for the past two seasons, Manchester City players have not won the PFA award. The Spaniard believes the same trend will follow this season as well.
