An established Salem, Iowa, dog breeder, Jake Kruse also directs K&E Landscapes, Inc., where he meets the needs of local homeowners for knowledgeable, cost-effective landscaping. One of the areas in which Jake Kruse has extensive experience is creating and applying mulch that nourishes and protects Midwest plants.
A general term, “mulch” can be made up of wood chips, clippings of grass, shredded leaves, bark, or composted manure. One major function of all types of mulch is impairing the germination and growth of weeds. The physical barrier presented by mulch prevents weeds from forcing their way into the ground.
Mulch also helps retain moisture during hot summers, when water often evaporates too quickly after watering to keep the soil hydrated and cool. As the bitter winter months arrive, mulch protects roots from extreme soil temperature fluctuations. This also prevents soil compaction and the issue of heaving, or the upward push of roots through pavement caused by not having space to comfortably expand below ground.
In addition to these protective functions, mulch offers a variety of nutrients that break down and migrate into the soil over time, providing nourishment to root systems. Because each mulch type has specific characteristic suited to particular soils, plants, and climates, it makes sense to consult with an experienced landscaper when mapping out garden plants and their specific requirements.
