Here In The Blink of An Eye

I paced back and forth along the shadowy edge of the wall, unseen. My new eye wasn’t as good as my old one, but it’s the only one I had so I would just have to make do. It took me a long time to get used to the complete loss of peripheral and depth.

In exchange, I had better hearing than ever. I could hear the worms wriggling in the ground below, and the mana streaming like split rivers through the skies overheard.

I had less legs too, and that was disappointing. I managed to get around, but I really missed that extra leverage and speed when I needed it.

I was trying to stake out my next hideout. It needed to be a place without a lot of activity, but close enough to food to make it worth my while. It took me three passes of the sun to find a better home. It was close to a place that smelled of meats and plentiful water and would do for now.

I found a wet, watery pipe leading itself and then I rested. In the following moon-passes, I would use that time to further hollow out the rocky wall around the pipe into my den. I began collecting morsels and interesting items for later. I would need multiple objects to build a proper buffer around the edges and lots of excess energy to spin the threads that would bind them together.

I slept and conserved my energy. The temperature was growing colder. Food was getting harder to find. Previously, the metal box would be full of old food and I could slip inside but lately, there were less deliveries of easy meals. That meant I had to go further to get the same amount.

Worse, something was creating some new kind of noise and I didn’t like it at all. It was like echoey watery whispers any time it was misty or cloudy. It filled my senses during the thickest parts of moonrise. I needed my sleep!

I thought about moving again.

Then my luck turned around.

First, I felt vibrations through my comfortable nest inside the wall and there was a great deal of commotion as many large two-footed beasts walked around inside. I didn’t like all the noise and stomping, but I did like the shiny things they brought and food.

Finally, the food came to me! I took the things I liked back to my lair whenever they were not present in the rooms. I was a lot smaller and faster than they were, so it was very easy to do. All I had to do was hide under things and stick to the shadows.

They made a lot more noise after that, with more hard foot noises and big mouth noises. I didn’t care. I had plentiful food and new trinkets to bind together. Nothing could make me happier.

I slept, full and gluttonous. There was the scraping of something nearby and I stirred. The mouth noises sounded close.

So I leapt up and my vision refocused, so I could see things better. My body thrummed, ready to run. All that extra food gave me plenty of speed and energy, should I need to burn it off.

A hand reached inside my hole.

I did what any proper being like me would do if threatened in their home. I attacked with the teeth hidden behind the structure of my eye. I was biting blind, but vision wasn’t too important when you could hear the smallest of sounds around you, especially this close. There was no chance I’d miss.

Another big mouth noise, really high-pitched. I was thrown back with a blow and struck into the side of the square rocks making up the walls around me.

I wiggled away, and made my escape through the pipe I had initially entered through into this place.

Of course, I couldn’t leave all my treasures and morsels there… I’d just wait until they left and come back to reclaim what was mine.
